How Many Official Languages Does Nigeria Have?

Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country and the largest in West Africa, diversified with various ethnic groups, tribes, and languages. The country consisting of 36 states is divided into six geopolitical zones namely; North-Central, South-South, South-East, South-West, North-East, and North-West, in which all the country’s 36 states are shared into. Nigeria is a country which is so diversified that there are over 100 languages spoken around the country. However, as a country colonized by the British, the first official language in Nigeria is English language. Following English language as the first official language in Nigeria are Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo languages which are Nigeria’s three major ethnic groups.
