Governor Akinwunmi Ambode ’s administration has been under the full support of his predecessor former governor Asiwaju Tinubu up until recently when corruption allegations rose against Tinubu. The former governor has been and is still a major decision holder as to the political appointments in the Lagos state government since the end of his own tenure, and anybody with ambitions to become the governor who doesn’t have his support is more or less playing a futile game.

Since the beginning of Ambode’s administration things have been looking up for him in terms of re-election for a second term based on his good works. However, he suddenly lost the support of Tinubu and his associates due to a recent corruption scandal involving Tinubu.

The scandal is stemmed from the 100 billion Naira fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering petition against Alpha Beta Consulting Company owned by Tinubu. The petition was written by Mr. Dapo Apara, the company’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, stating that the company is an avenue for massive corruption of government officials and a front for money laundering, tax evasion amounting to an aggregate of 100 billion Naira, since it was first established and appointed as a consultant to the Lagos State Government, its first client, during Tinubu’s governorship since 1999 and under the tenure of Babatunde Fowler as the Chief Executive Officer/Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Board of Internal Revenue from 2005 to 2014. The company has been running its corruption scheme of collecting 10 percent of the state’s revenue for its services which was estimated to be at 40 million Naira monthly, under the protection of powerful politicians in the Lagos state government who have kept its corrupt activities a secret until now.

However, with the EFCC on the company’s radar, Tinubu’s lifeline corrupt data is getting loose under Ambode’s leadership which is a major reason behind the withdrawal of his support for Ambode’s re-election and endorsement of Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu for governor under the APC, in a bid to place someone in the office under his grasp. Governor Ambode who has been more focused on his duties as the governor rather than politicking and protecting his political allies apparently brought troubles for himself within the political circles in the state.

He has been tagged as one who has alienated the political mainstream in the state with a capacity to decapitate Tinubu and his associates should he get a second term. Governor Ambode has reportedly been dismantling schemes such as the PSP waste disposal and others involving many of his political allies, without their consideration which seems to be vexing them.  Tinubu’s loyal APC followers have also complained that the traditional acts of patronage which normally came with the way of government did not come from Governor Ambode.
