The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, announced the second case today at a press conference in Benin City. The Health Minister briefed reporters on the update of the coronavirus infection in the country. He emphasized that the second case was a contact of the first case and not an importation into the country.
Ehanire assured that important response strategies have been utilised at the containment stage. One of which was identifying all contacts, ensure their strict isolation, and daily follow checks for any disease symptoms. Samples were taken from all contacts of the index case for testing resulting in the discovery of the second case.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) also confirmed the second coronavirus case via its verified Twitter handle. According to it, the case is a contact of the index case in Ogun state. The subject has been in isolation and was tested in a bid to check all contacts of the index case.
Since the first case was confirmed in Lagos, the NCDC said it has been supporting the Ogun State Emergency Operations Centre to respond accordingly. Therefore, Nigerians are urged not to panic as the situation is presumably under control. Nigerians are also advised to take necessary measures to protect themselves from the virus.
