Nigeria Leads Africa’s Push for Unified Oil Regulations

Nigeria has spearheaded the creation of the African Petroleum Regulators Forum (AFRIPERF), a landmark initiative to harmonise oil and gas regulations across the continent. The charter, signed in Accra by regulators from 16 nations, saw Nigeria, Ghana, Somalia, Gambia, Madagascar, Sudan, Guinea and Togo formally endorse the pact. Led by Nigeria’s Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, AFRIPERF aims to boost transparency, attract investment, and address cross-border challenges such as emissions control and licensing standards. While seen as a breakthrough for Africa’s energy sector, analysts warn that divergent national priorities and weak enforcement could hinder implementation.
