The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently announced that there should be no public campaigning by any of the presidential candidates until November 18, 2018. According to the INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the decision is based on the timelines given by the agency and the provisions of the Electoral Act, which prohibits campaigns by political parties earlier than 90 days before polling day.

Mr. Yakubu advised parties and their candidates to adhere to the electoral timetable during a workshop themed “Strengthening Electoral Democracy in the Commonwealth African Region,” held for election professionals from the Commonwealth Africa Region. He reminded political parties and candidates that the end of primaries did not mean the immediate commencement of campaigns. In addition to the official date for the commencement of presidential campaigns, he stated that campaign for Governorship and State Assembly elections will begin on the 1st of December, calling on all political parties and candidates to comply with the given dates.

With the official dates for election campaigns declared, candidates and political parties will be gearing up to rock the nation with rallies and promises in a bid to win. Nigerians certainly need to prepare for the wave that will come with these election campaigns over the next few months, and should be warned against the gifts and empty promises of unqualified candidates. The official dates for the governorship and State Assembly elections was also said to be the 22nd of October and 2nd of November.
