Global Politics: UK Officially Recognises Palestine in Historic Foreign Policy Shift As Netanyahu Opposes

The United Kingdom has formally recognised Palestine as an independent state, a landmark decision announced on 21 September 2025 to preserve the two-state solution. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the move aims to “revive the hope of peace” amid Gaza’s deepening humanitarian crisis. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper reaffirmed Palestinians’ right to self-determination, while stressing Hamas must release hostages, accept a ceasefire, and disarm. Israel condemned the recognition as rewarding terrorism, but Britain insists it is not a concession to Hamas. The UK joins Canada, Australia and Portugal, signalling renewed global momentum on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
