Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, was appointed on August 27 2015 by President Muhammadu Buhari. Mr Lawal was suspended as Secretary to Government of Federation on April 17 2017, and was relieved of his duties on October 30 2017 for misappropriating funds intended for alleviating the food crisis in Nigeria’s Northeast, caused by the Boko Haram.

Mr. Lawal was accused of benefiting illegally from the approval of N544million for the removal of invasive plant species and simplified irrigation. The former SGF is currently in the custody of the anti-graft agency and had pleaded not guilty to the 10-count charges leveled against him by the EFCC. He is being tried alongside Hamidu Lawal, Sulaimon Abubakar, Apeh John Monday, Rholavision Engineering Limited and Josmon Technologies Limited.
