Abbas Hajaig is a Lebanese Engineer who was born in 1961 and raised in Nigeria and eventually naturalized as a citizen of the country. He is most well known in Jigawa State and environs, as well as the Nigerian business community, as the owner of Hajaig construction company which has built a reputation as one of the most reliable construction companies in Nigeria. Having being raised in Birnin Kudu in Jigawa state where his parents settled in, the Hajaig family was given the traditional title of Zanna of Birnin Kudu, first given to Abbas’ brother and passed down to him after his brother’s death, mostly for their contributions to the development of the community which they identify with as true members.
Abbas Hajaig who has become one of the most successful Lebanese businessmen in Nigeria identifies himself as a full Nigerian having passed through Nigerian schools and also participating in the mandatory National Youth Service Corps programme. He now has ambitions to pursue a political career in Nigeria as a senator representing Jigawa Central Senatorial District under the PDP’s platform. His ambition to become a senator in the country is stemmed from his proclaimed love for Nigeria and mission to show other part’s of the world how Nigeria’s democracy has evolved considering the fact that if he succeeds he will make history as the first immigrant Nigerian to be elected senator.
According to Hajaig, the motivation behind his political ambition is mainly to give back to the society which raised him to become the successful businessman he is today. Nigeria has seen a lot of dubious Lebanese businessmen who have exploited the country’s government and economy for personal gain, defrauded innocent citizens, and have walked away scot-free. Hajaig’s aspiration for an electoral office is at risk of being affected by the crimes of his fellow Lebanese brothers. However, if he is the true Nigerian that he claims to be he may have a chance at succeeding in his ambition for the senatorial seat. Hajaig sees himself as a good Lebanese who understands the needs of the country from its roots having been born and bred in Jigawa and recognized within the community as such, and is confident that come the elections he will be victorious.
Engineer Abbas Hajaig has certainly opened a new chapter in Nigerian politics which has never been explored since the independence. Perhaps, Nigeria is in need of this kind of change which other countries have explored such as in the case of the United States which elected former first black president Barack Obama who is a Kenyan by origin.
