Who Is Paul Usoro? Why Is A Nationally Recognized Lawyer Accused of Financial Crimes Worth Billions

Paul Usoro is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). Paul Usoro is a well known figure in certain legal, business and political fields in Nigeria. Paul Usoro is Chief Executive Officer of his company, Paul Usoro & Co Law Firm. He is also well invested in other businesses. Paul Usoro is a Non-Executive Director at Access Bank, one of Nigeria’s top 10 financial institutions and Airtel Telecommunications, one of Nigeria’s top 5 network operators.

In 2018, Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) accused Paul Usoro of laundering over 1 Billion Naira from Akwa Ibom State Treasury through the then governor of the state, Udom Emmanuel. In his defense, Paul Esoro claims payments totaling 1.4 Billion Naira from Akwa Ibom Government to Paul Usoro Chambers were for legal fees. EFCC insists the payment is a criminal diversion of public funds and not an official transaction for the benefit of the people of Akwa Ibom and thus Usoro deserves to be criminally persecuted.
