On Tuesday, April 7th 2021, the President of Nigeria appointed Usman Alkali Baba as the new acting IGP to take over from IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, who retired after 35 years of service to the nation.
Usman Alkali was commissioned into the Nigerian Police Force on March 15 1988 where he started as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police. He is a graduate of University of Maiduguri where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.
Until his appointment as the acting IGP, he has held several strategic positions in various commands of the force. These includes a few:
- Divisional Police Officer in Yola, Gombe, Kaduna and Jo’s.
- Area Commander in Ilorin, Kwara State.
- Deputy Commissioner in Kaduna and FCT respectively
- Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Delta state
During an interview with the media, the new chief of police says he would like to “leave a legacy of policing with human face. “
