Walter Nkanu Onnoghen was nominated as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria by the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbanjo. He was confirmed by the Senate on March 1 2017, and sworn in on March 7, 2017. Walter Onnoghen officially held one of the most important jobs in Nigeria as of March 2017. The fairly wealthy man is entitled to a comfortable salary and several benefits as the Chief Justice of The Supreme Court of Nigeria.

On January 25th, 2019, Justice Onnoghen was suspended by President Mohammadu Buhari due to an alleged breach of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers. Justice Onnoghen is being arraigned for asset declaration offenses, after being charged for allegedly owning and funding sundry accounts through cash deposits made by himself. He failed to declare the accounts as required by law.

The source of his wealth and full net worth has not been confirmed yet. However, Justice Onnoghen has a farm in Masaka, Nasarawa State and has referred to Agriculture as the source of his wealth.
