Nigerian Women, Where Art Thou In Leadership?

It might sound like unbelievable reality but there is a drastically low number of women groups having serious conversations about politics in 2019 and it is evidently shown in the just concluded national elections in Nigeria. Do we have women tackling the mess in our children’s civic education textbooks where it is written that the head is for “carrying load” and that women are meant to be positioned in the kitchen of their households?

Do we have any female gathering where there’s a keen desire to rise above the already imposed stereotypes and kick against the status quo? Do we have women groups and gatherings where we present a new female narrative for growing girls, a new reality so they wouldn’t be soaked in the same mess we find ourselves?

Are there women questioning the gender equality bill that is now under the weight of religion beyond the cyber picture display everyone puts out for the internet these days. Are there women groups or individuals set out to strip down the religious and cultural doctrines hovering the atmosphere like air pollutants and infiltrating the air we breathe.

I’m genuinely in need of answers on this regard because to the world, it seems like we have accepted the image that they have sculpted us to represent. It isn’t acceptable that we be termed losers without the opportunity to try. Changing the narrative wouldn’t be as easy as it might pose because it involves taking our power back from the opposite gender.

Right here, we are talking about rights and how we want to be significant in a society that thrives on objectifying women and tossing their relevance in a kitchen in some household. We are taking back our respect if amongst ourselves we have any.
