World Tourism Day: Top 5 Tourist Attractions In Nigeria

The World Tourism Day falls on the 27th of September annually and is celebrating its 38th year today. It was established by the United Nations at the third session of the U.N. World Trade Organization General Assembly in 1979 to celebrate tourism as one of the world’s most important industries. It was perceived as a milestone within the international community and has demonstrated the important social, cultural, political and economic effects of travel globally.

In outlining the founding values of the day, the UN expressed that; “Every time we travel, for whatever reason, we are part of a global movement; a movement that has the power to drive inclusive development, create jobs and build the sustainable societies we want for our future; a movement that builds mutual understanding and can help us safeguard our shared natural and cultural heritage.” According to the UN, September 27th was particularly chosen to honor the subject because it comes at the end of tourism’s high season in the Northern Hemisphere and the beginning of the holiday season in the Southern Hemisphere.

In the spirit of the World Tourism Day celebration, here are top 5 tourist attractions in Nigeria that every tourist should tick off their must-visit list:
