Would One Last Push For Peace End South Sudan’s Civil War?

For all there is to say, I know that this latest push for peace could end the deadly civil war in South Sudan. South Sudan’s civil war broke out in late 2013 when troops loyal to then-Vice President Riek Machar clashed with forces loyal to President Salva Kiir. More than 50,000 people died. More than 4 million displaced. A quarter of a million people severely malnourished and at imminent risk of death. All hazards were caused by the chaotic clash between both groups.

For a country that is only seven years old, these five years of horrific and repeated disasters is a huge disappointment. Now, the men at the center of the carnage are about to meet face to face for the first time in two years to try to broker a peace deal. We can only hope that it be guided by its people – not just the political elites. Our generation’s millenials, political elites inclusive, are prone to unnecessary hazards and violence that is uncalled for because once power overwhelms you, it renders you inhumane and selfish. No person in South Sudan would want – and none of the sane leaders should want – countless more lives to be ruined through this war.

Hopefully this is the case and if not, it is a dead end. So, we anticipate the outcome.
