Announced by Hadi Sirika on Twitter, The Junior Aviation Minister posted to his followers: “I regret to announce that the Federal Executive Council has taken the tough decision to suspend the national carrier project in the interim. All commitments due will be honoured. The suspension was strategic and had nothing to do with politics.”
The Governor of Sokoto State of Nigeria, Aminu Tambuwal also spoke out: “N1.5bn of taxpayers money wasted on a poorly planned Nigeria Air now suspended. Our administration will properly plan and execute any project we undertake so as to stop wastage of scarce resources. A Greater Nigeria is possible with the right people at the helm. The future is now.”
It seems this suspension is due to the lack of private investors interested in buying the assets of Air Nigeria and re-developing the airline as the official national carrier. No further details or specific reasons have been provided from the government of Nigeria for the suspension of the project.
