Tunis is the largest city and capital of Tunisia, country located in North Africa.  54 year-old Souad Abderrahim, of the Ennahda Movement party, the first woman to run for mayor of the Tunisian capital, collated 33.8 percent votes in Sunday’s local elections, which was first local election in Tunisia since the 2011 revolution that initiated the Arab Spring. Her party won the local elections with 27.5 percent of the total votes, according to state-run broadcaster. The voting process ended at 6.00 p.m. with a low turnout of 33.7 percent, says the High Election Commission.

According to unofficial results, Nidaa Tounes, the second largest party with 55 deputies in the parliament, came in second place in the elections with 22.5 percent of the votes. Due to security concerns, 179 polling stations remained closed. Tunisian commentators say Abderrahim, who does not wear a Muslim headscarf, has considerable support.
