Governor Ibikunle Amosun was a senator in Nigeria representing Ogun Central District, a position he served from April 2003 to 20007. In April 2007 Ibikunle Amosun made an unsuccessful bid to be elected governor of Ogun State and ran for governor again in 2011, when he was eventually elected under the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) party now the All Progressive Congress (APC) party. Ibikunle Amosun ran for office for a 2nd Term under the APC party in 2015 and was successfully re-elected as governor of Ogun state.
Aside from his political career, Senator Ibikunle Amosun is also a member of the Institute Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and Institute of Chartered Taxation of Nigeria. He began his career as an audit trainee with Lanre Aremu & Co. (Chartered Accountants) 1984 and progressed to establish his own accounting firm called Ibikunle Amosun & Co. (Chartered Accountants) in 1990 where he was the Principal Partner. He furthered his education at the University of Westminster London UK, where he acquired a Masters of Arts in International Finance.
With his ample professional and political career, Senator Amosun has risen to become one of the most powerful men in Nigeria and has received various local and international awards and recognition such as the Best Security Conscious State Governor in West Africa by Security Watch Africa in Accra, Ghana in 2012, Investment Development Icon Award for 2013 from African Leadership magazine in New York, the Good Governor Award as the governor of the fastest growing state economy awarded by Businessday Newspaper in Lagos. In September 2014, former President Goodluck Jonathan conferred on him the National Honour Award as the Commander of the Order of the Niger (C.O.N) and he also bagged the Governor of the Year award for 2016 for his outstanding achievement in leadership and infrastructural development.
Senator Amosun has been a top regional pillar in the APC alongside President Muhammadu Buhari and has become one of the President’s most loyal confidants in the Southwest, as he was also one of the strong allies who backed the President in his successful election in 2015 and has re-affirmed his support for the president’s re-election in 2019. The Senator also played a huge role in the appointment of incumbent Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun who was once his Commissioner of Finance, through his close relationship with the President.
