Driving through Abeokuta, Ogun State, on an Olatorera Consultancy assignment in August 2018, I was shown a massive property that is the current residence of Ibikunle Amosun, current governor of Ogun state and former Senator of Nigeria, who happens to be aspiring to be a Senator yet again. It was easily the most modern structure in the city of Abeokuta. The roads leading up to this edifice were in perfect condition compared to other roads in the city. During that same period, Amosun was in the news, enforcing his selected successor for Governor of Ogun state. He had elected for an undemocratic process within his party and said there would be no primaries, his candidate would represent the party. Shocking undemocratic albeit illegal process but, this is Nigeria and this seems to be the route APC leadership has been taking so far this year.
My colleague, Olivia Arusuraire, published earlier this year, How Ibikunle Amosun Became A Top 10 Most Powerful Man In Nigeria. We saw his power and we saw how well he was abusing his power. Now forward to October 2018, Amosun’s “selected successor” did not win the All Progressives Congress (APC) party ticket. Oh, but how?! and Amosun is at high risk of losing his ambition to become a senator in 2019. His power seems to have fallen as greater powers are working against him. The powers we suspect are at play here include Adams Oshiomhole, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his friend, Muhammadu Buhari, all APC party leaders. As of October 13th, 2018, Amosun seems to have secured the APC Senatorial ticket for his Ogun State district but his chances and power in the party still seem diminished. The following are 2 reasons why we did not predict Ibikunle Amosun to lose power so soon as the pre-elections drama in Nigeria continues.
- It is well known that he is good friends with the current president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari. It is also very possible that this propaganda was widely leaked by Amosun himself to strenghten his position in the affairs of the nation. Nonetheless, as we saw in recent months, one of Amosun’s allies, Kemi Adeosun, was booted out of politics in Nigeria in 2018 for having forged her NYSC certificate.
- He has accumulated a lot of wealth over the last 8 years as Governor of Ogun State with evidence in his new residence in Abeokuta and many other properties he owns across the state, Lagos and Abuja.

[…] That same year, the billionaire, Dapo Abiodun, was said to have donate $1 million cash to help Ibikunle Amosun (Read: How Ibikunle Amosun Became A Top 10 Politician In Nigeria) get re-elected as Governor of Ogun State. Dapo Abiodun also distributed over 110 million Naira to help Ibikunle Amosun’s men get re-elected into Ogun State House of Assembly. In 2018, He proclaimed that his goodwill to Amosun was betrayed as Dapo Abiodun sought to become Governor of Ogun State in 2019 and Ibikunle Amosun blatantly refused to support him, picking another candidate instead (Read: The Undemocratic Way By Which Amosun Seeks To Enforce Next Governor On Ogun State).
