Politics In Nigeria: The Major Reason Why The Lagos State House Of Assembly May Impeach Governor Ambode

The elite arm of the Lagos state All Progressives Congress (APC) party has reportedly hatched further plans to completely oust Governor Akinwunmi Ambode out of the gubernatorial sit even before the end of his tenure, following the successful bid to replace him as APC’s primary candidate for the upcoming elections for Lagos state governor.

The hatched scheme by the ruling party which has been said to now be at an advanced stage is said to be a last-minute solution to a feared defeat of the party in next year’s gubernatorial election. However, the state is in a current state of division in regards to the impeachment of Governor Ambode. Meanwhile, the Factional chairman of the state’s group of the party, Mr Fuad Oki, has warned the Lagos House of Assembly to drop its threat to impeach Governor Ambode or it would incur the wrath of the people of Lagos. As it stands the state is divided into the pro-impeachment and anti-impeachment groups.

A Lagos-based civil rights movement called Save Lagos Group (SLG), has stated that it had concluded to soon protest against the House of Assembly over the illegal impeachment process against Ambode and warned the  Assembly against being used by selfish individuals to impeach the governor.

However, the major weapon to used by the elite group of the party to move the impeachment and get the public on its side is the raging issue of heaps of refuse in the state, which has become a major point for discussion of the House of Assembly who recently authorized the restricted Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators to resume work all over the state including areas where they had been barred by the state environmental laws. The restriction of the PSP by Governor Ambode has been a major contentious policy issue for the his administration, which contracted the major refuse disposal engagements around the state to Visionscape, restricting PSP operators who previously had the entire space to themselves. The discontent of residents of the state over the challenged capacity of Visionscape to handle the refuse business is now being exploited by the party elite to push their agenda through.

It was reported that after the appearance of the commissioners summoned by the state assembly, the lawmakers plan to launch an investigation into the payment allegedly made to Visionscape on the order of Governor Ambode, after the assembly had pronounced the Visionscape a ghost firm. The elite party of the Lagos state APC seem to be more than determined to void Ambode’s administration.
