Top 5 Richest Churches In Nigeria

Richest churches in Nigeria have been built overtime and many have franchises across the world. Religion, for time immemorial, has been one major money-making enterprise in Nigeria. Nigerians are easily brainwashed when it comes to matters concerning God and religion and as such, one cannot easily differentiate between the truly ordained men of God and the make-believes who are in it to fool gullible individuals and rid them of their hard-earned money (Read: The Top 5 Reasons Rwanda Closed Down Over 700 Churches). Many “men of God” in Nigeria can conveniently make it to the list of Nigeria’s richest men judging by the amount of money and properties they own. The richest churches in Nigeria are able to convince their congregation to to contribute at least 10% of their income to the church’s revenue on a weekly basis.

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG)

Nigeria’s biggest church, RCCG, was founded in 1952, by Pa Josiah Akindayomi. The founder, before his death in 1980, ordained Pastor Enoch Adeboye, as a pastor in 1975 and would later transfer the mantle of leadership to Pastor Adeboye. Adeboye has led the church as its General Overseer since  the death of his predecessor and now, the church has Bible Colleges, Schools, a University, a TV station, many publications, and the Redemption Camp, which is an estate in itself. The RCCG also have over 5 million members globally and is headquarters is in Lagos Nigeria, with a camp in Ogun State that could accommodate a million worshipers in a single service. It is also located in many other countries including Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana, Zambia, England, Germany, and the United States.

Living Faith Church Worldwide (Winners Chapel)

Founded in 1981 by Bishop David Oyedepo, the church has grown from a mere gathering of Christians to a religious conglomerate. It’s founder Bishop Oyedepo is the richest pastor in the world and has been alleged to own four private jets, a figure he has since debunked and reduced to one. His church auditorium held the Guinness Book of record for being the largest church auditorium in the world in 2008. It has a capacity of 50,400 and sits on 10,500 hectares of land.

Christ Embassy (Believers Loveworld)

In 1987, Pastor Chris Oyahkilome formed a little prayer cell at the Ambrose Ali University where he was studying architecture and that unsung group amounted to one of Nigeria’s biggest churches today.  The church has provided for Oyakhilome a good platform for his other business interests which include banking, publishing, broadcasting, entertainment and the hospitality industries. A normal Sunday service at the headquarters chapel of Christ Embassy draws not less than 30,000 worshippers. Most of them come from distant parishes of the church and the attraction is Oyakhilome himself who they all want to see live on the pulpit. The church operates like a conglomerate with major money-spinning arms of the ministry like LoveWorld Cyber Ministry, LoveWorld Television, Love World Christian Network, LoveWorld Multimedia Ministry, Loveworld Records, and LoveWorld Publishing Ministry. Barely two years after its establishment of Loveworld Records, it is said to have broken into international markets like the United Kingdom, Canada, United States of America, South Africa and Ghana. Its monthly turnover is put at more than N10 million.

Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM)

Largely known as a prayer ministry, the MFM was founded by Dr. Daniel Olukoya in 1987.  The ministry has a multi-billion naira prayer city reportedly worth around N50 billion, a N2.5 billion university, a deliverance stadium that would worth N1 billion, a book called Prayer Rain that allegedly rakes in around N3 billion, amongst others. It is among the top three ministries with the largest acquisition of land after Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye and Bishop David Oyedepo.  The auditorium, which is fashioned after the Redemption Camp could accommodate over 500,000 worshippers, with an overflow of 250,000. Also, the multi-billion Prayer City houses several chalets for male and female and of course, couples. The chalets are booked daily by worshippers who come in for prayers, especially during their monthly programmes. This enterprise is also worth over N2 billion including its annual revenue. The ministry also embarked on a huge project called Deliverance Stadium estimated to gulp over N1 billion.

The Apostolic Church

The Apostolic Church Nigeria was an offshoot of the Apostolic UK. In 1931, three missionaries from the UK brought the church to Nigeria. It is one of the oldest and biggest in Nigeria with over 4.5 million members, while it’s national temple in Lagos, Nigeria can sit up to 100,000 persons in a single service. The church also has branches all over Nigeria in no small amounts.
