“When the missionaries came to Africa, they had the bible and we had the land. They said ‘Let us pray.’ We closed our eyes. When we opened them we had the Bible and they had the land.” – Rolf Hochhuth. We are first to tell you that this quote did not originate from an African. It originated from a German, an outsider with knowledge of Africa’s history.

The above quote, often attributed to African leaders Desmond Tutu and  Jomo Kenyatta, is actually original to Rolf Hochhuth, author of “The Deputy, A Christian Tragedy”. Rolf insisted that the introduction of the bible to many Africans initiated the loss of wealth and the rise of poverty within the continent.

Regardless of who authored the quote, the variations of the quote or whether it is fictitious or not, it remains a ‘powerful quote for thought’ for many Africans.
