Stella Nyanzi, aged 44, is a Ugandan medical anthropologist, feminist, scholar of sexuality and human rights activist. Stella received her Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication and Literature at Makerere University, Master of Science in Medical Anthropology at University College London and PHD in Anthropology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine where she studied social anthropology, Sexuality, youth and Health Policy.
In 2009, Stella Nyanzi began at Makerere University as a Researcher at the Law, Gender & Sexuality Research Project, she was suspended from Makerere University after making a nude protest against her boss and was dismissed in December 2018.
In March 2017, Stella Nyanzi referred to the President Museveni as “a pair of buttocks.” She was arrested and detained on April 7 2017, on charges of cyber harrassment, offensive communication and insulting the President. However, she was released on bail on May 10, 2017. Stella was arrested again last year in November in relation to a boorish birthday poem she posted on social media on September 16, 2018, a day after President Yoweri Museveni’s 74th birthday. The poem was crafted in vulgarity targeted at Museveni’s late mother Esteeri Kokundeka. She pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Nevertheless, an International outcry followed Stella Nyanzi’s arrest, with human rights groups condemning the act as a violation of academic freedom and freedom of expression. Amnesty International called for Uganda to drop the “absurd charges” against her.
