Yahaya Kwande is an aged political leader in Nigeria. The Plateau-state-born politician, aged 90 in 2019, is a member of Nigeria’s All Progressives Congress (APC) Party. Kwande currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for APC. At the peak of his political career, Yahaya Kwande served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Switzerland. His most notable son, Suleiman Yahaya Kwande was elected a member of the Federal House of Representatives in 2015, representing Plateau state. Suleiman Kwande lost his 2019 re-election bid under the APC party.
Yahaya Kwande has been a loyal political friend to former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, for many years. Both men started out in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where Kwande garnered majority of his political success. In later years, Atiku moved to the APC party and was elected as Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BOT) for the party. Kwande followeed Atiku into APC and also became a BOT member. To run for President in the 2019 elections, Atiku moved back to the PDP party. Kwande stayed in APC but remained loyal to Atiku. He received Atiku at the Plateau State Airport in Jos and attended Atiku’s Presidential Campaign Rally. The leaders of the APC Party queried Kwande for remaining loyal to Atiku. Atiku lost the 2019 Presidential elections to Muhammadu Buhari and his loyal friend, Kwande, publicly called for Atiku to accept defeat.
