On Friday, June 5th 2020, Gbolahan Lawal was officially announced to the public as the incoming Oba of Oniru, a position first son of former Oba Oniru, Olusegun Oniru, coveted. Lawal is succeeding Late Oba Abiodun Oniru who passed on in 2019 aged 82. Up until a day before his announcement as Oba, Gbolahan Lawal served as Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture under Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu. Lawal is said to be one of former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s most trusted aides for over 2 decades. Tinubu since his tenure as governor ended is known to still control over 90% of all major political appointments in Lagos State.

Although highly unexpected, Lawal became Oba of Oniru through his political relationships, more especially his close loyalty to Tinubu. Although not a blood relative or intimate member of recent past Oniru Royal family, Prince Lawal is also a descendant of royalty. Since the passing of former Oba Oniru, the only two contenders known publicly for the throne were Olusegun Oniru and Hakeem Ajasa. Both contenders lost out on their ambitions to the throne. There seems to be minimal contest against Lawal’s crowning therefore, Congratulations Oba Gbolahan Lawal of Oniru Royal Family of Lagos Nigeria.
