Nigerian billionaire business magnate and investor, Innocent Ifediaso Chukwuma is the founder and CEO of Nigeria’s first indigenous automobile manufacturing company Innoson Group popularly known as Innoson Motors, which has Innoson Manufacturing, Innoson Tech. & Industries Co. Ltd as its subsidiaries. He was also the Deputy Chairman of the National Coalition for Jonathan/Sambo Presidency, a group which was set up in 2013 for the promotion of former president Goodluck Jonathan’s election.
Mr Chuwuma and his company, Innoson Motors Nigeria Limited, were charged on a four-count charge of conspiracy to obtain by false pretences, obtaining by false pretence, stealing and forgery committed between 2009 and July 2011 in Lagos by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). They were alleged to have conspired to obtain, by false pretences, containers of motorcycles, spare parts and raw materials, property of Guaranty Trust Bank, from Mitsui OSK Lines Limited, Apapa, Lagos. They were also alleged to have fraudulently induced staff of Mitsui OSK and Maersk Line to deliver to them, through their clearing agents, the goods that were imported from China in the name of GTB by falsely pretending that they were authorized by the bank to clear the goods.
Mr Chukwuma and his company were said to have forged a bill of lading of Maersk Line Limited and Mitsui O.S.K. Line by knowingly putting a false GTB stamp and signature of the bank staff in order that the forged documents be used or acted upon as genuine to the detriment of any person within Lagos or elsewhere.
However, all efforts made by the EFCC to arraign the defendant on five consecutive occasions went futile as he continually defied showing up in court despite being declaring wanted on May 23, 2018, and also a bench warrant issued by the court. The EFCC vowed Wednesday to ensure that Mr Chukwuma is arrested to face fraud charges in court after yet another failed attempt to bring him to justice before a Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, which struck out the case for failure to produce Mr Chukwuma in court to face trial.
