Born in Tudun Wada, Kaduna State, Nigeria in 1967, Shehu Sani is a Nigerian politician and member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Shehu Sani is a current serving senator of Nigeria, based in Abuja and representing Kaduna Central. He is author of several books including When Clerics Kill, Hatred For Black People, The Killing Fields and Prison Anthology: A Collection of Poems Written from 1995 to 1998 in Kaduna, Kirikiri, Port Harcourt and Aba Prisons. Shehu Sani once advised someone to “Use glooves when shaking politicians.” Aged 50, he has served his constituency as senator, since 2015; he expected a second term in 2019 but his dreams were cut short when his party presented Uba Sani as their preferred Kaduna Central Senatorial Candidate. Uba Sani is a political adviser to Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai. Shehu Sani and El-Rufai have been at war publicly since 2015. Looks like El-Rufai won. In 2018, El-Rufai, Governor of Kaduna State, indicated a strong preference for Uba Sani to become the Senator representing Kaduna Central instead of incumbent Shehu Sani. Politicians in Nigeria have been going back and forth between the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress. Shehu Sani is one of those politicians and he recently lost his senate seat while a member of the APC party. Sahara Reporters, a website known for unleashing political scandals in Nigeria, noted that Uba Sani, a senate aspirate, through certain middlemen, paid Adams Oshiomhole, APC party chairman, bribery of $2 million to be undemocratically appointed senatorial candidate under APC in place of incumbent Shehu Sani. This led Shehu Sani to depart the APC party in 2018.
In Shehu Sani’s letter to the APC party chairman, which he also shared with the media, Shehu Sani said: “I had joined the APC and remained with it against all odds in the belief that it will constitute a veritable platform for the realisation of those democratic ideals which I hold very dear. I joined in the belief that honour and integrity will be the ultimate ethos of the party and most importantly, that internal democracy will always be the norm…As I exit the APC at this point in time, I wish to formally thank the party for availing me the platform upon which I am currently serving this country.”
