Who is Victor Giadom? How did he become APC National Chairman?

Victor Tombari Giadom KSC is a politician of the Ogoni tribe from the Gokana Local Government Area in Rivers State, where he was served as Executive Chairman. The Knight of Saint Christopher served as the Commissioner for Works under Governor Rotimi Amaechi between 2011 and 2015. He also served as the chairman of the governorship campaign team for 2015 election for the Rivers State APC. Giadom first joined the National Working Committee of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in 2017 as Deputy National Secretary.

GIADOM

By 2019, he became the Acting National Secretary of the ruling party as his predecessor received a political appointment. He later resigned the position to become the Deputy Governorship candidate and running mate to APC Tonye Cole for the 2019 Rivers State Gubernatorial election. However, the ticket was dismissed by the court dismiss forbidding APC from contesting in the 2019 gubernatorial election for Rivers State.

The Niger-Delta politician returned to the APC National Secretariat as Acting National Secretary until March when the court declared him as the Acting National Chairman of Nigeria’s ruling party. Interestingly, some of the top positions of the APC were vacant during the time of the court order. One of the reasons being that the Adams Oshiomole-led National Working Committee had suspended deputy national chairman north. Furthermore, the deputy chairman south was vacant as the last official, Niyi Adebayo, became a minister of the federal republic; and the south-west was unoccupied as well. The national secretary position was also vacant as Mai Mala Buni, was to become the Yobe state governor. The only senior official was the deputy national secretary who was acting as the acting national secretary. In terms of seniority, Victor Giadom was the most senior officer, hence his claim to the office of acting national chairman. The FCT High Court order approved his position in March 2020 and Appeal Court in June 2020.

One of his first acts as acting national chairman was to call for new screening of APC governorship aspirants for the Edo State governorship election. Thus, cancelling the earlier screening exercise approved by the Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee (NWC). This controversial decision has added to the crisis currently rocking the party. We wonder how Giadom will run the embattled political party presently facing a myriad of court cases and internal divisions, all in time to keep the APC in the best shape to win the 2023 election circle.
