Why Are Nigerian Doctors On Strike Amidst COVID-19?

On June 15th, 2020, The National Executive Council (NEC) of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), embarked on a total and indefinite strike. The NEC of NARD indicated that the federal government failed in meeting previous demands necessary to alleviate current working conditions. The strike calls for all NARD members to vacate their duties except members currently working in emergency isolation centers.

The Unmet Demands That Necessitated NARD’s Current Strike:

  • Government must make provisions for supply of grossly inadequate appropriate Personal Protective Equipment for all health care workers.
  • Immediate reversal of the illegal disengagement of all 26 resident doctors in Jos University Teaching Hospital.
  • Payment of all salaries owed them, in keeping with provisions of the Medical Residency Training Act.
