Nigeria: Importance Of The Internet In Education

Recently,  the Minister of Communications, Dr Adebayo Shittu stressed the need for internet access to achieve quality and inclusive education in Nigeria. The Minister made the remark while declaring open the 2018 edition of ‘Nigeria Internet Governance Forum’ held in Abuja, with the theme: ‘Internet: An Enabler for Good Governance.’’ He placed emphasis on the use of the internet as a tool to drive education process, stating that it is the only way to guarantee socio-economic advancement of the country in an inclusive manner. In making his remark, the Minister said: “The task of improving the lives of the vulnerable and the underprivileged is not for the government alone, it is for all stakeholders. ‘‘Many Nigerians lack access to internet, but I can assure you that the ministry remains committed to ensure that internet access is extended to all parts of the country. “Many people don’t have access to the internet but we know that when they get connected, they can achieve extraordinary things. The internet belongs to everyone.’’

The Internet has been crucial in the evolution of our education system in various ways. Teachers can use the internet as a modern tool for education. The Education department should provide the infrastructure that teachers and student can use to get benefits of technology in education both in Nigeria and the world at large. Although the misuse of the internet in the world today cannot be ignored and should be strongly tackled by the various communication agencies in government responsible for its regulation. The great benefits of the internet and how it has influenced the digital age cannot be overemphasized and should be harnessed by the education sector.
