Benedict Peters is one of Nigeria’s richest men in the Oil & Gas sector. He is founder and vice chairman of Aiteo Group, the largest indigenous producer of oil in the country. Aiteo Group was founded in 2008 and within 10 years, Benedict Peters won the 2018 Forbes Oil & Gas Leader of the Year Awards. Benedict Peters is worth an estimated $2 Billion, as of 2016. His leadership journey started as a founding employee at Ocean and Oil Limited (Now Oando Nigeria) owned by Adewale Tinubu, Nephew to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Governor of Lagos State and Godfather of The All Progressives Congress (APC) party. Benedict Peters continued his career journey as the Managing Director of MRS Oil Nigeria for several years before founding Aiteo Group. His executive group members at Aiteo Group include Andrew Onyearu and Chike Onyejekwe.
In early 2017, Benedict Peters was wanted by EFCC Nigeria, in connection to a 23 Billion Naira bribe scandal in relations to Africa’s most corrupt woman, Diezani Allison Madueke. He was said to have given Diezani $60million out of the $115 million she used to bribe election officials in 2015. According to EFCC before the publication was de-listed from EFCC’s website, ““Dark-complexioned Peters is wanted in connection with a case of criminal conspiracy , diversion of funds and money laundering. He hails from Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. His last known address is 8B Agodogba Avenue, Parkview Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos.””
In March 2018, An Abuja High Court of Nigeria, presided by Justice Othman A. Musa, ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s listing of Benedict Peters as a most wanted financial criminal, was unconstitutional. It seems EFCC has been unable to prove their case against Benedict Peters (Or for some possibly unethical reason, decided to drop the case) as 7 months after the court ruling, he is no longer on the most wanted list. EFCC must release a statement notifying the public why Benedict Peters is no longer wanted for his bribery allegations with Diezani Alison Madueke.
