Richest Foreign Immigrants: Who Is Italian Billionaire Gabriele Volpi? And How Did He Cause A Turbulent Rift Between Uncle Bola Ahmed Tinubu And Nephew Adewale Tinubu?

Gabriele Volpi is an Italian businessman and investor who obtained a Nigerian citizenship in the 1970s. He is one of Italy’s richest men having made his wealth from oil-rich Nigeria and Angola. Gabriele Volpi started his oil-industry sourjourn by servicing oil producing firms and later struck gold, owning an oil field in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. As he moved upwards, he invested and established his companies in Angola too. Today, Gabriele Volpi’s net worth is estimated at over $2 Billion. He owns one of the world’s most luxurious yatchs that can contain 16 guests and 23 employees. Gabriele Volpi’s $75 million yatch has a cinema, gym and luxurious pool on the upper deck. Aged well over 70 today, his sons Simone and Matteo Volpi have taken on leadership positions at his companies in Nigeria.

Billionaire Volpi’s investments lie not only in Africa but in Italy, owning a football club and a water polo club. A war erupted between Gabriele Volpi and Adewale Tinubu in 2016 stemming from millions in debt financing Volpi provided to Tinubu’s OandO. In 2018, the London Court of International Arbitration ruled in favor of Gabriele Volpi’s companies in a case that mandated 2 of Wale Tinubu’s companies to pay a debt of $680 million to invetsor Gabriele Volpi. It is said that Uncle to Adewale Tinubu, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, supported Gabriele Volpi, rather than his nephew through the course of the turbulent war between billionaires. Adewale Tinubu is currently undergoing significant financial issues since the oil market took a hit in Nigeria in 2014.
