Who Is Buruji Kashamu? How Did An International Drugs Lord Become A Senator In Nigeria?

Buruji Kashamu is a Nigerian Senator representing Ogun East senatorial district in the current 8th National Assembly. He is also famous for being the drug lord that led a heroin trafficking ring in 1998 and is still wanted by the United States government. On August 8th, 2020, the former Nigerian Senator died of COVID-19 complications. A big question amongst Nigerians years ago was: how can a man who is still wanted for heading a huge drug trafficking ring become Senator, a member of the lawmakers of the country?

Over the years, Buruji Kahasmu has succeeded in evading his alleged crimes which he committed several years ago which dozens of people pleaded guilty to and named him as the leader, by establishing several businesses which are supposedly legitimate and embedding his hooks in Nigeria politics which have successfully gained him a senatorial seat. This makes us wonder if the Nigerian government forgot about his alleged drug trafficking case still pending in the United States, which has also been working tooth and nail to bring him to justice. It is very wrong for Buruji Kashamu to be a Senator, firstly on the grounds of his apparent alleged crimes which he has not yet fully been declared not guilty and also his other scandals which involve the falsification of his educational qualifications to enable him become a Senator.

Certainly, Buruji Kashamu’s rise as a Senator was not based on the right reasons, but to aid him in escaping several crimes and scandals and to gain him more wealth adding to his already accrued ill-begotten wealth.
