As First Lady of Nassarawa State, Mairo Almakura has served as a top 10 woman in politics in Northern Nigeria. She is a close friend and associate of the first lady of Nigeria, Aisha Buhari. From 2018-2019, she served as one of Aisha Buhari’s biggest supporters to get Muhammadu Buhari re-elected again as President of Nigeria.

Mario Almakuro is a strong advocate for forgotten citizens. During her tenure as first lady of Nassarawa state, she helped free over 70 inmates. These inmates at Lafia Prison in Nassarawa state had been imprisoned for many years, many due to theft, armed robbery and others for their inability to pay certain fines. Almakuro paid all fines and ordered the release of the inmates. Poverty is a major cause for crimes in Nigeria. We strongly hope Mario Almakuro instituted prisoner rehab and monitoring prior to releasing the prisoners into the general public.
